NJ Seal of Biliteracy

Seal of Biliteracy

What is the Seal of Biliteracy?

A special recognition awarded by The New Jersey Department of Education to celebrate graduating high school seniors who have successfully demonstrated a high level of proficiency in speaking, reading, listening and writing in one or more World Languages, in addition to English.

Why seek the Seal of Biliteracy?

The Seal of Biliteracy opens up opportunities for those pursuing higher education or joining the workforce. As the world increasingly becomes more global, the need for employees with bilingual and multilingual skills has increased.
Employers seek bilingual or multilingual individuals for reasons such as:

  • Accessing expanding markets;

  • Better serving customer needs;

  • Reaching particular and wider ranges of audiences; or

  • Opening a channel of communication with customers.

How do our students earn the Seal of Biliteracy?

In order for students to be eligible to receive the Seal of Biliteracy, they must meet certain criteria:

  • Students must demonstrate a proficiency level of Intermediate Mid in a World Language in all four domains of language.

  • Students must demonstrate proficiency in English by meeting State high school graduation requirements in English or its alternatives, including through State ELA assessments.

All Juniors and Seniors currently enrolled in an AP World Language Class (or Latin IV) will be automatically enrolled to take the STAMP 4S test in January to qualify for the State Seal of Biliteracy.  Although Juniors can take the test, the Seal is only awarded to current graduating Seniors; however all Juniors who qualify for the Seal will receive the Seal upon meeting high school graduation requirements as Seniors.
