Last night, our Board of Education made a significant decision regarding the potential Tax Levy Incentive Aid from the state that was the topic of the last Board meeting and our Community Engagement night. After careful consideration, the Board voted 5-4 to fully embrace this opportunity, which includes a tax levy increase aimed at moving Hillsborough closer to our fair share of state funding and adequate spending levels.
We understand that discussions about school funding can create uncertainty, and we want to be transparent with you. This decision wasn't taken lightly. The Board believes this is a crucial step towards securing a more stable financial future for our schools and, ultimately, for our entire community. We've developed a responsible and strategic plan, focusing on a balance of non-recurring and recurring costs to provide greater flexibility and sustained stability in the years ahead, with more non-recurring costs planned for 2025-26.
However, our efforts now hinge on two critical external factors:
- State Approval: We've submitted a detailed proposal and are awaiting the state's feedback and approval. Official confirmation and clear guidance have been limited so far, but we are hopeful they will recognize the thoughtful planning behind our approach.
- Governor's Appropriations: The Governor's budget package must also pass for this aid to materialize.
We know you were likely hoping for definitive news at this point. While we share a sense of hope and cautious optimism about the Board's decision and the work we've put in, we are still navigating factors outside of our direct control. We can't offer absolute reassurance just yet.
Please know that your Board and administrative team have poured our energy and focus into this. As soon as we receive further information – particularly regarding state approval and the Governor's appropriations – we will share it with you immediately. We are hopeful that positive news is on the horizon for Hillsborough Township Public Schools. We are also actively sharing information about tax relief for seniors who are eligible.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. We will keep you informed every step of the way. Stay connected for updates!

The Hillsborough Township Public Schools are closed on Monday, April 21st.

Tonight, the Board of Education took a preliminary step by voting 6-3 to apply for the ability to raise the local tax levy by up to $20 million and potentially receive $1 million in state aid.
It is crucial to understand that taxes have NOT been raised at this time. This vote simply allows the Board to move forward with the application process.
Before this application is submitted, your voice matters! The Board wants to hear directly from you at a Community Engagement Night this Thursday, April 10th at 7:00 PM at Auten Road Intermediate School.
This is your opportunity to learn more about this potential application, ask questions, and share your thoughts.
Please note that even if submitted, the application requires approval from the state. Following state approval, the Board of Education will then vote on whether to include any such funding in the 2025-2026 school budget on April 28th.
You have TWO key opportunities to be heard:
This Thursday, April 10th at 7:00 PM: Community Engagement Night at Auten Road Intermediate School.
Monday, April 28th: Board of Education meeting where the budget will be discussed and voted on at 7:30 PM at Auten Road Intermediate School.
We encourage all community members to attend Thursday's engagement night to ensure your perspectives are considered before the application process moves forward.

There will be a Board of Education meeting tonight at 7:30 in the Auten Road Intermediate School cafeteria. As a part of the Board President's report, a presentation about a budget option from the state involving the local tax levy will be given. Please note that tonight's discussion will be about this possibility and the ability to potentially apply to the state for consideration. While this discussion is important and all community members are invited for input, tonight is about Board level discussion of this issue, not immediately taking action. Should the Board want to explore this option, a resolution with a specific dollar amount would need to be created by the Board tonight. The Board would need to apply to the state by April 14th and then be approved by the state before moving forward. If such funds were indeed authorized, the Board would have to vote on taking action for that purpose during the public budget hearing on April 28th.
